Mogens Zieler was active as a painter since his early boyhood, but in
addition he later became one of our most important graphic artists, mainly
working with linocuts and pencil drawings for book illustration purposes.
In fact, most of the pictures on this website originated as pencil- or
crayon-drawings, or lithographs, subsequently published in the numerous
books he illustrated.
Zieler's paintings can be seen in several museums. The largest collection
by far is the one in the Horsens Museum of Fine Arts.
This museum possesses, by virtue of a special agreement with the artist,
works enough to present changing exhibitions.
My thanks to Claus Hagedorn-Olsen, head of the Horsens Museum of Fine Arts,
who generously provided many of the snapshots of paintings and graphic
works from the Horsens collection.
Apart from those in the museums, Zieler's paintings are all in private
possession. Ample support of this website-effort will hopefully motivate
owners of significant Zieler-works to share photos of these with all of us.
Invaluable assistance has been given me by Mr. Carl Frederik Garde, Zielers
friend and biographer. His book, "Om lidt er alt så længe siden" (1969), is,
although so far only in Danish, an indispensable work for those wanting to
know more about Zieler and his art.
The book-collector, Mr. Chr. Sørensen, has helped me with many specialized
articles about Zieler, primarily as a book-artist.
A good source for on-line ordering of Zieler's illustrated books is provided
by this link to several Scandinavian second hand bookshops.
Simply search for "zieler", and you should get about 100 returns.
Zieler created his own world - a truly magical one, as you will see.
